Eastern Suburbs Cafe by Celeste is a down-to-earth spot nestled on Military Rd in Matraville that locals lean on for their daily coffee fix and simple, satisfying bites. The place has a neighborhood feel, where the familiar faces behind the counter—Crystal often mentioned for her warm, welcoming manner—make visiting feel like dropping by a friendly mate’s kitchen rather than a bustling commercial cafe.

The atmosphere is casual and unpretentious, drawing in a mix of early commuters, nearby workers, and regulars who appreciate a reliably good coffee served with a side of genuine friendliness. While it’s not a place you’ll find fancy latte art or extravagant brunch plates, the straightforward espresso and ample selection of toasties and wraps hit the mark for a grab-and-go or a relaxed sit-down morning or midday break. If you’re passing through after a morning walk near Botany Cemetery or the surrounding suburbs, this cafe offers a pause that’s easygoing and sincere.

On the food front, the menu is practical and ranges from quick sandwiches like chicken schnitzel wraps and turkey & brie rolls to heartier options such as a big breakfast or fish and chips. The falafel roll has a local reputation, repeatedly noted by customers for its fresh, punchy flavor—a reliable choice for vegetarians or anyone wanting something a bit different without fuss.

The best time to visit tends to be mornings or early afternoons, when the pace is steady but not overwhelming, allowing the friendly staff to engage with guests without rush. It’s also a spot where small groups or families might come together, as evidenced by visitors bringing in personal moments to share—a reminder that the cafe’s welcoming vibe holds space for comfort beyond just food and drink.

Overall, Eastern Suburbs Cafe by Celeste fits well into Matraville’s laid-back local scene. It suits those who want a no-frills coffee paired with straightforward, well-made snacks and the kindness of a neighborhood team that remembers your order and your name.

We visited Eastern Suburbs Café by Celeste today as a family to celebrate my aunty’s one-year anniversary of her passing. The young girl who served us was truly incredible, she went above and beyond to make our day feel special. Her kindness, attentiveness, and care made a difficult day much lighter for us all. We are so grateful for the warmth and compassion shown, and we couldn’t have asked for a better experience. I can not recommend this beautiful cafe highly enough

Great coffee! Lovely staff. Working in transport, we pop in here most mornings for a coffee. They have a good selection of toasties and snacks.

This cafe has the best falafel roll in the world, no lie! I'm not sure if they make it on site or order it in but oh my god, you need to have one.

I have my morning coffee here everyday and honestly what I love most is Crystal her warm vibe, the way she treats everyone, and of course, the great coffee.
